Traveling to Jinja
Jinja is only 80km from Kampala but allow at least 2 hours (currently there are roadworks that can delay even longer) by road, the slowest section is getting out of Kampala and past Mukono. From there (apart from a stream of slow heavy vehicles) the going is generally much easier and you pass through areas of sugarcane and tea plantations, Mabira Forest and down from Mbiko into the Nile Valley, crossing the River over the Owens Falls and Nalubale Dams. A new bridge is currently being built for completion by 2016.

Histroy of Entebbe
“Entebbe” in a local language means a “seat” and was probably named that because it was the place where the Buganda chief sat to adjudicate legal cases. It first became a British colonial administrative and commercial centre in 1893 when Sir Gerald Portal, a colonial Commissioner used it as a base, Port Bell went on to become Kampala harbor. Although no ships dock is there now, there is still a wreckage which was used by Lake Victoria ferries.

RELIGIOUS CENTERS

Namugongo Martyr's Shrine
The site was established in remembrance of the massacre that took place on 3rd June 1886 on the orders of the then chaotic Kabaka Mwanga fulfilled by Mukajanga when the martyrs failed to renounce their adopted faith. It is situated about 15 km from Kampala city center along Jinja road.

Attractions at the site include the conical metallic domed style church supported by 22 copper pillars each representing a Martyr and housing a jaw born for Charles Lwanga the then leader of the catholic contingent. The 1000 seat Basilica arranged in a circular form is Closed with wooden doors depicting the history of the martyrs, the grass thatched pavilion supported by 4 (four) pillars on the martyr’s lake island is an ideal place to view the 15 acres compound of the site. Martyrs lake where pilgrims often drawn water believed to healing various diseases and used for blessing.
